Maximizing the Experience: Creating Visually Engaging Syllabi Online
Have you experienced the frustration of writing a detailed course syllabus only to see students tuck it away never to be seen again? Do you find yourself responding to the same student questions over and over again with “it’s in the syllabus?” Perhaps you are exploring ideas to enhance the visual aesthetics of your current syllabus to draw students’ attention to important course information. The syllabus is often described as a contract, a user’s guide, and an advertisement of an instructor's course all in one document. However, most instructors know the challenge with many of today’s digitally-influenced students not reading the syllabus – at least not as carefully as instructors would like. In this session, participants will explore the motivations and rationale for creating and using visually-enhanced course syllabi. Examples, tips, and tools for creating visually engaging syllabi will also be highlighted.
