GIS Day: Terrain Models & 3D Printing

GIS Day: Terrain Models & 3D Printing In-Person

Did you know the Experiential Learning Commons in the Garden Level of Moody Library provides 3D printing capabilities? They sure do!

Participants in this hands-on workshop learn how to use QGIS, an open-source and cross-platform GIS desktop application, to select a natural terrain to send to the 3D printer. We will use the DEMto3D plugin to export terrain data to an .STL file. We will then walk through the 3D printing options and submit a file for printing!

Participants will select from a wide variety of locations to send to the 3D printer. Want to print the terrain of Lake Waco? The Grand Canyon? The Kīlauea volcano in Hawaii? All these and many more locations can be done. We will obtain Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data from anywhere in the U.S. from the USDA:NRCS:Geospatial Data Gateway.

  • No GIS or 3D printing experience required. All are welcome.
