Create unique impressions of original poetry using pressure, moveable type, and experimental printing techniques with book artist and printmaker Rachel Simmons. The process begins by generating raw material through erasure or black-out poetry, a practice of finding hidden poems within existing texts. With words and images in hand, you'll choose fonts to represent your poems and experiment with printing ghost impressions, dragging inky letters across the page, using repetition, and found textures to see how typography can influence the meaning of words. Working experimentally, you'll discover how each approach opens up different expressive possibilities. Influenced by experimental letterpress artists like HN Werkman and Alan Kitching, this approach invites play and discovery at every step.
